Manchester, England — The Manchester Derby once again showcased the gulf between the two sides as Manchester City overpowered Manchester United 3-0 at the Etihad Stadium yesterday. A first-half header from Phil Foden and a clinical second-half brace from Erling Haaland sealed an emphatic win for Pep Guardiola’s men, who looked sharp, ruthless, and completely in control.

First Half: Foden Breaks the Deadlock

United started cautiously, trying to sit deep and frustrate City’s passing game. For the first 15 minutes, their plan looked solid, with Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford looking to counter quickly.

But the resistance didn’t last. In the 18th minute, Jeremy Doku whipped in a dangerous cross, and Phil Foden rose highest to head the ball past Altay Bayindir, sparking jubilation among the City faithful. It was a reminder of Foden’s growing importance in Guardiola’s system and his knack for delivering in big games.

 Second Half: Haaland Show

If the first half belonged to Foden, the second half was the Erling Haaland show.

  • 53′ Goal: After a slick build-up down the left, Doku slid a perfectly timed pass into Haaland’s path. The Norwegian star calmly lifted the ball over Bayindir to make it 2-0.

  • 68′ Goal: Ten minutes later, Bernardo Silva picked off a loose United pass in midfield and released Haaland. Outpacing Harry Maguire, Haaland slotted a composed finish into the bottom corner to seal the match.

Haaland almost completed a hat-trick when he rounded the keeper late in the game, but his effort struck the post.

 Reactions

Pep Guardiola praised his team’s mentality:

“These matches are never easy, but the way we reacted after the international break was fantastic. Phil was brilliant, and Erling… what can I say? He is always there when it matters.”

United boss Ruben Amorim admitted his team was second best:

“We had moments, but against City you must be perfect. We lost the ball too easily, and they punished us. It’s a hard lesson, but we must improve.”

From the players:

  • Erling Haaland: “To score twice in a derby is special. We wanted to show who dominates Manchester, and I think we did.”

  • Phil Foden: “I wanted to make an impact, and scoring in front of our fans is a dream. Nights like these mean everything.”

    What It Means

The result sends City back into the Premier League title hunt, keeping them within touching distance of leaders Liverpool. For United, the defeat is another setback in their push for Champions League qualification, with rivals like Tottenham and Aston Villa piling on the pressure.

The derby once again reminded fans of the contrasting trajectories of the two clubs: City look hungry, disciplined, and ruthless, while United continue to struggle for consistency and identity.
